Chapter 12
It took a few seconds for Reggie to process Braydenâs statement. And even when he repeated it, and she was sure sheâd heard him right, she still couldnât really believe it.
âI donât understand. Nadine more or less grew up here,â she said.
âDid you know her personally?â
âNot really. I mean, we werenât friends, and I canât say Iâve talked to her since she came back. But Whispering Woods only has the one elementary schoolâwhere I heard Nadine took a job, actuallyâand the one high school, so we crossed paths lots of times.â
âWeird that she happened to turn up again now.â
âItâs been a month or so, I think.â
âSo maybe a coincidence.â
âMaybe.â
âWhat about this guy?â Brayden swiveled the laptop on the bed. âYou recognize him.â
âYes. Thatâs her dad. He came into the diner occasionally before he died.â
âHeâs the shared parent. This man is definitely Tyler Strangeâs dad, as well.â
âYouâre kidding.â
âNope.â
âSo...â
âThe man had two families.â
âAt the same time?â
Brayden shrugged. âThereâs a six-year gap between Tyler and Nadine. I didnât see any divorce papers myself, but I do know the split came well after Tylerâs sixth birthday.â
Reggie studied the screen for another moment. âSo this probably means that the whole reason for Tylerâs visit to Whispering Woods was that he found out.â
âSeems likely.â
âSo what now?â
âI question Nadine. Try to figure out if sheâs also the reason he came back, and see if she can connect her brother to Garibaldi.â
Reggie sat on the edge of the bed, grabbed Braydenâs coffee and held it out as she asked, âHow?â
âThanks.â He took a small sip. âHow do I question her, you mean?â
âMmm-hmm. I mean, itâs not like you can walk up to her in an official capacity, right?â
âNo. But I did tell you once before that I have some experience with subtlety. I promise it wasnât a lie.â He threw her a wink that was distracting in the sexiest way possible.
She pushed aside the immediate need to let her toes curl pleasantly and instead picked up her own coffee and replied, âI know it wasnât, Detective. But Iâm just trying to think of an easy way to get her to talk to you without a need to fabricate another story about how we met.â
âWe could tell her weâre thinking of having a baby and want to ask some questions about the school.â
Heat crept up Reggieâs cheeks. âYeah, Iâd prefer to take a route that doesnât make her think Iâm crazy.â
He slid sideways and wrapped his free arm around her waist. âDo I have to remind you so soon that I need crazy?â
Reggie rolled her eyes, but still pressed her face to his bare shoulder, a question popping out before she could stop it. âWas she not crazy enough for you?â
âWho?â
âYour worse-than-mine story. I assume it was a woman?â
âOh. You actually want to hear it?â
âOf course. I showed you mine. You have to show me yours,â she teased.
âGuess I should give you the background first. Through most of high school, I dated this girl named Chandra. Off-again, on-again kinda deal.
